Kirkman - Cycles, Electrical & Sports Goods - 40 The Broadway (1956-1980)

Harry Kirkman moved from Southampton to Crawley in 1920/21 and took over the Crawley Rubber Stores in the Square. He continued this business and combined it with a cycle shop, and later also sold radios. He assembled bicycles in his workshop, which was a hayloft above old stables in Ifield Road, before the workshop moved to Church Walk. A colleague from Southampton, Jack Allen, came to Crawley to work for him as a mechanic, staying until the late 1930s. A sideline was acting as agents for a parcels carrier, Sutton's. Parcels were delivered by lorry each morning and were distributed using Kirkman's hand-truck. He was well known in Crawley, and did a lot of work for the local Scout group. The shop in the square was demolished in 1958.
