Founded in 1899 by Tommy Bartley and John Ward. They took over a building firm run by the Gates family, which was established in 1855. By the early 1900's plumbing, decorating and funeral work were carried out from premises at Cross Keys and Three Bridges Road. In 1930 Hall Beddel & Co took over the business and moved to 58 Three Bridges Road. In 1969 the company ceased all trading other than as Funeral Directors and was sold back into family ownership. Ballard & Shortall are the successors to the business who moved to 10 Haslett Avenue.
